Iowa's Family Investment Program (FIP) screens applicants first on gross income — a household of three, such as a parent and two children, generally must earn under about $1,571 a month to pass the initial eligibility test — and then figures the actual grant using a separate, lower payment standard capped at $426 a month for that same household size. Iowa HHS operates 102 offices across 100 cities, and caseworkers there can walk applicants through the process alongside the hhsservices.iowa.gov self-service site. FIP recipients also work with PROMISE JOBS, the state's companion employment and training program, to build a Family Investment Agreement laying out the steps toward self-support required to keep the grant active. Federal law caps FIP receipt at a total of 60 months over a lifetime, counting any months of cash assistance already used in another state.
